DR JAMES B MILLER BSc MBChB (Glas) 1973 MRCP(UK)

Dr Miller came to the practice in 1979 after four years general medical
experience as a Registrar at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. He is a member
of the Royal College of Physicians and has a particular interest in dermatology,
in which he holds a clinical appointment at Heathfield Clinic. As trainer
in general practice he is responsible for the training of GP registrars
and co-ordinates the practice continuing education, audit and significant
event monitoring programmes. He is also an undergraduate tutor for final
year medical students. Now too old to play, he remains obsessed by cricket.
DR A CRAIG SIMPSON MBChB (Glas) 1972 FRCP(UK) MRCGP

Dr Simpson came to the practice in 1981 after a spell as registrar in
geriatric medicine at the Victoria Hospital, Glasgow and general medicine
at Royal Alexandria Infirmary, Paisley. He is a member of both the Royal
College of Physicians and Royal College of General Practitioners, and
has a particular interest in diabetes, ischaemic heart disease and accreditation
of nGMS and is a GP appraiser.He enjoys golf and outdoor pursuits. He
also trains and judges German shorthaired Pointers.

DR PAULEEN E SHEARER MBChB (Glas)

Dr Shearer is a native of Ayr and joined the practice in 1989, bringing
a welcome female viewpoint to our team. She has a special expertise in
paediatrics and asthma and is responsible for the child health surveillance
programme and asthma clinic. She is a member of Belleisle Golf Club and
Troon Ladies Golf Club, as well as being a keen curler and skier.

Dr Miller joined the practice in 2000.
He is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and has spent
time in various hospital specialities gaining a wide range of experience.
He has particular interest in hypertension and renal disease and is also
involved in the child health surveillance programme. He was recently accredited
as a trainer for General Practice. He regularly plays five-a-side football
and also enjoys golf.

DR CLAIRE A E OLDFIELD MBChB (Glas)

Dr Oldfield joined the practice team in August 2002. She was born in Ayr,
educated at Belmont Academy and much of her medical training has been
completed in local hospitals. Two of her five years' hospital medicine
were spent in Australia gaining additional experience in psychiatry, A&E
and paediatrics. She has a special interest in family planning, epilepsy
and palliative care. She enjoys keeping fit and playing squash.

Dr. Phin joined the practice in April 2005. She initially did a Pharmacology
degree at Edinburgh University before going on to study medicine. Although
originally from East Lothian, most of her hospital experience has been
gained in Ayrshire hospitals. She is a member of the Royal College of
General Practitioners and has a special interest in family planning and
palliative medicine.
DR SIMON FARRELL MBCHB(HONS)(GLAS)2002; MRCGP; DGM; DRCOG; DFFP

Dr Farrell is our newest partner. He joined the practice team in August
2007 having completed his GP training in Glasgow. He is a member of the
Royal College of General Practitioners. Originally from Kilmarnock, his
hospital experience was gained in Ayrshire and Glasgow hospitals. He has
a particular interest in Medicine for the Elderly and also continues sessional
work in Accident and Emergency in Ayrshire hospitals. A keen sportsman,
he enjoys football, tennis and skiing. He is also a member of Balmore
Golf Club.
THE
GENERAL PRACTITIONER REGISTRAR
Before entry to general practice, hospital
doctors, with several years' experience of hospital medicine, must successfully
complete a year in an approved practice. This practice has been involved
in the further education of registrars since 1985 and finds the experience
both stimulating and rewarding.

Dr LORNA PATTERSON MBChB (Glas) 1987 MRCGP DRCOG

Dr Patterson completed GP training in Blairgowrie in 1991. She returned
to general practice after a break to raise her family. She gained considerable
experience in dermatology in Inverclyde before moving to Ayrshire where
she has further developed her special interest performing out-patient
clinics at Heathfield Hospital, including Minor Surgery Lists.

NURSE/MIDWIFE - SISTER ANNE COOPER
Sister Cooper works full time in the surgery. She is a midwife and also
works on a sessional basis in local family planning clinics. She sees
patients by appointment for well woman screening including cervical smears,
menopause advice, contraceptive and preconceptual advice, blood pressure
and obesity checks. She also offers general health advice, adult/young
adult and pre-school immunisations, travel advice and immunisation, and
general nursing duties including dressings and ear syringing. As a midwife
she is involved in the antenatal and postnatal care of patients within
the practice.
Sister Cooper, in association with Dr Shearer, runs a weekly clinic for
asthma patients. She has a diploma in asthma care and is a National Asthma
Training Centre instructor.
NURSE SHIRLEY-ANNE LYDON works part time in the surgery. She is a qualified Nurse Prescriber and has a Diploma in Diabetes Care.
She sees patients by appointment for well person screening with special emphasis on reducing risks of coronary heart disease (CHD), encouraging patients to stop smoking, reduce weight and improve dietary habits.
She provides regular health monitoring checks for patients who have been diagnosed with Diabetes and/or Coronary Heart Disease. She provides contraceptive services including coil checks, contraceptive implants & removals and depo injections as well as pre-conceptual care and cervical smear tests.
In addition, she offers general nursing duties including stitch removal, ear syringing, adult/young adult immunization, dressings and Holiday Vaccinations.
NURSE SANDRA MYERSCOUGH
works part time in the surgery. She undertakes general nursing duties including dressings, stitch removal, immunisations, smoking cessation, ECG, Helicobacter Pylori Breath Tests and ear syringing.
She provides regular health monitoring checks for patients who have been diagnosed with Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Epilepsy and Mental Health problems.
NURSE FIONA MITCHELL
joined the nursing team on a permanent part time basis in January 2008. She has a Diploma in Asthma Care and a Certificate in Diabetes Care.
Nurse Mitchell sees patients by appointment and undertakes the full range of general nursing duties as well as offering contraceptive services, coil checks, depo injections, cervical smear tests, Helicobacter Pylori Eradication Breath Tests, and Holiday Vaccinations

PHLEBOTOMIST
Mrs Sandra Kavanagh is available only for venepuncture
and is in the surgery for morning appointments. Patients who require regular
blood tests to monitor the effects of their treatment may be asked to
attend the phlebotomist.

ATTACHED NURSING AND PARAMEDICAL STAFF
DISTRICT NURSING SISTERS - 293348
Several district nurses are attached to the practice and liaise closely
with the doctors at weekly practice meetings. They provide nursing care
at home for a wide range of patients including the elderly, post operative
and terminally ill, enabling them to remain in their own home during their
illness and convalescence.

HEALTH VISITORS -

We have two health visitors attached to the surgery. Their aim is to promote
good health and to prevent ill-health for all age groups. This is achieved
by clinic assessments, home visits and health education, and there is
a drop-in child health clinic at North Ayr Health Centre. There is also
a child health surveillance clinic in the surgery on Thursdays staffed
by Dr Shearer and the health visitors, and an immunisation clinic run
by the health visitors weekly on a Friday between 2.00 and 4.00pm.
COMMUNITY MIDWIFE - 285893
There is a pre-booking antenatal clinic every Tuesday at the surgery,
and antenatal patients can be seen at this clinic for assessment and advice
. We offer parenthood education, for example:- couples classes, aquanatal
and breastfeeding workshops and also visit prospective patients in their
homes.

CLINICAL COMMUNITY
PSYCHIATRIC NURSES - 619699
The community mental health nurses see individuals, following referral
by their GP, either at home or within the surgery. The nurses offer a
variety of services including supportive counselling, bereavement counselling,
advice on stress and anger management techniques, and information on other
local services appropriate to the patients’ needs.
DIETICIAN
The Dietitian attends the surgery to provide support and advice to patients who have been diagnosed with Diabetes.
Appointments are also available in regular Dietetic Clinics to offer support and dietary advice to patients who suffer from eating disorders or who need additional help to manage their weight.
Dietetic appointments are by GP Referral. |
